About Random Team Generator

The random team generator splits a list of names into teams. Paste one name per line, set Number of Teams, and press Generate Teams. Each line is trimmed and blank lines are ignored, and the live counter shows how many names were found. You need at least two names before the button is enabled. The list is shuffled with a Fisher-Yates shuffle driven by the browser's Math.random, then dealt out round-robin, one name per team in turn. That means every team ends up within one person of the others: seven names in three teams gives sizes of 3, 2 and 2, with the extra person landing in the earliest teams. The number of teams is never lower than 2 and is capped at the number of names, so asking for ten teams from four names gives four teams of one. Duplicate names are not merged, so two lines reading Sam give two separate people, which is useful for same-named people but worth checking in pasted lists. Balancing covers headcount only. The tool cannot weigh skill, keep pairs apart or together, or reuse a seed, and Math.random is not cryptographically secure. Results are labelled Team 1, Team 2 and so on, and Copy Teams places them on your clipboard as a plain-text list.

How to use Random Team Generator

  1. Paste or type the names into the Names (one per line) box.
  2. Set Number of Teams, which must be at least 2.
  3. Press Generate Teams to shuffle and deal the names.
  4. Press Generate Teams again for a new split, or Copy Teams to take the list.

Frequently Asked Questions

After shuffling, names are dealt to teams one at a time in rotation. Team sizes can therefore differ by at most one person, and the larger teams are the lower-numbered ones.

The number of teams is capped at the number of names, so each team has one person. The minimum is 2 teams, and the Generate Teams button needs at least 2 names.

No. Only headcount is balanced, and assignment is fully random. For skill-balanced teams, split the list into tiers yourself and run each tier through the generator separately.

No. Each line is treated as a separate person, so a name entered twice appears twice. Remove repeats first if the same person is listed more than once.

It uses a standard Fisher-Yates shuffle with the browser's Math.random, which is fine for classroom, sports and game-night splits but not for anything needing cryptographic randomness.

Not reliably. Every press of Generate Teams reshuffles with no seed. Press Copy Teams to save a result you want to keep.
