About Hash Generator

This tool computes cryptographic hash digests using five common algorithms: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 — either from text you type, or from a file you select. File hashing is what you need to verify a download matches the checksum published by its source (e.g. confirming an ISO or installer wasn't corrupted or tampered with in transit) — paste the expected hash into the compare field and it's checked against all five algorithms automatically. SHA-2 family hashes are computed using your browser's native Web Crypto API; MD5 and SHA-1 are included for legacy/checksum compatibility but should not be relied on for security-sensitive purposes since both are considered cryptographically broken. Everything — including file contents — is processed locally; nothing is ever uploaded to a server.

Frequently Asked Questions

For anything security-related, use SHA-256 or stronger. MD5 and SHA-1 are fast and fine for checksums or non-security use cases, but both have known collision vulnerabilities and should not be used to protect sensitive data.

No — the file never leaves your device. It's read and hashed entirely in your browser using the File and Web Crypto APIs.

Select the file, then paste the checksum published by the site you downloaded it from into the "Compare" field. If it matches one of the computed hashes, the file is intact.

Files up to 200MB are supported. Larger files risk running out of memory in the browser tab.
